STEPPING OUT OF A 90s SITCOM

If you're new to the blog welcome, but if you’ve been around for a while, you probably know and understand my love for anything retro and vintage. And I run a vintage store on Instagram at The Vintage Connection Ng. Now, I've come to notice that a lot of people actually want to rock the whole vintage look most especially retro shirts but they don't want to look like they just walked out of a 90's sitcom.

I'm one of those people who doesn't mind though as I tend to go a bit overboard in my outfits and yes at times dressing like I just stepped out of an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air or a Different World. Hence this post will be all about how to modernise a vintage shirt. So how does one rock a vintage shirt and still look modern? Stay tuned for more tips below.

This post was actually supposed to be a look book but the rain spoiled the show and we eventually got wet (the things we bloggers do though). For my first look, I just paired my shirt with a blazer which I didn’t actually wear as this seems to be the new trend. Then I opted for a pair of skinny black jeans. I tend to go for more loose fitting pieces so I sometimes forget how slim I can be.

Look two features my go-to combo of a retro shirt and high waist trousers. And then the addition of my belt which I can’t live without, have you guys noticed?

Tips 1: The first tip is to throw a structured blazer over your shirt. Opt for plain colours and avoid printed retro looking options.

Tip 2: Rock that shirt with skinny jeans as I did in this look. When you think retro, baggy and oversized fits generally comes to mind, so if you’re rocking a loose fitting shirt, go for more fitted bottoms.

Tips 3: Opt for modern footwear. What do I mean by modern footwear? Well you might want to stay away from pumps especially kitten heels. Go for sandals, single sole heels and most especially lace up booties like I did in this post

Tip 4: Pair your retro top with a lovely pencil skirt. You can opt for a slightly shorter length as well.

Tip 5: Finally the new trend is to wear your shirts off the shoulder. Styling your retro shirt in such a way will also reinvent the vintage shirt and make you look instantly trendy.

  1. I already knew you'll kill it so I can't even say much. I love wearing my vintage skirts with pencil skirts tho and adding a skinny belt if the skirt has belt loops. I don't mind trying the whole blazer and pants thing too. You go girl 🙌🙌🙌
